Strategy with Kristy: Nick DiVella
May 03 2012, Kristy Arnett Related Articles Strategy with Kristy: Aaron Jones Part Two Strategy with Kristy: Reid Young Discusses Showdown Value Strategy with Kristy: Tax Time Share It Tags Las Vegas, PokerNews Podcast, PokerNews Strategy Print Nick DiVella, 24, lives in Las Vegas and is a professional live cash-game grinder. Previously an online player, DiVella now plays $5/$10 and $10/$20 and is a coach at StackemCoaching.com. On the latest edition of Strategy with Kristy, DiVella discusses taking shots in live games and two cash-game hands. Here is a snippet from the interview during which DiVella talks about a hand his friend played at $5/$10: He was stuck a little bit when this hand came up last week at Aria. He makes it $40 under-the-gun with jack-ten of hearts. He gets four callers, so there’s $200 in the pot. The flop comes nine-eight-three rainbow. He leads with $140 and gets one call. The turn is the four of hearts. He leads for $250 with an open-ended straight draw and flush draw. His opponent raises to $800. The player is a little wily but doesn’t get out of line too much. We have $1,700 in our stack, and it’s another $550 to call. I guess I”ll turn it over to you. What would you do? Well, I don’t think we have fold equity. I don’t think so either. That’s what I told my friend. It’s not often that someone raises to $800 and folds here. Maybe if he bet $120 and his opponent raised to $300 and we had $1,400 or $1,600 behind. Then I think a shove is OK. I think the right play here is to call. A few of my students have said that they would fold because they don’t like sticking half their stack in with a draw, and that is very bad thinking. You have to realize that the pot odds are there and implied odds. If you hit your draw, you’re just going to open shove $1,100 and probably get called by a set or two pair. And if they were on a draw themselves, then that’s just how it goes. So anyway, he ended up calling $550 and the river was an offsuit six. The action went check, check. Since his opponent’s range is most likely two pairs and sets, I don’t think he should shove river when he bricks. I think it’s suicidal. But, his opponent ended up showing king-eight for just a pair of eights. It turns out, we actually did have fold equity on the turn, but I think that it’s so rare. [Laughs] I guess when putting someone on a range, you can add in a couple of “spazzes,” too, if the player is capable of a few. Yeah, I think that this happens less than 10 percent of the time. Podcast Powered By Podbean Tune in every week for new episodes of Strategy with Kristy.

Larger payouts – online poker as seen by a college student
1 February 2009 The world of online poker has drawn those who are compelled by the online poker competition and the potentially large cash payouts that can be won. Mike Brinker from the US is an online poker success who used his cash winnings to gain independence and survive.Mike has won more than $9,000 playing online poker. Mike turned to online poker when faced with a choice that confronts millions of college students every year: stay in school or get a job.Mike played online poker as well as being drawn to the poker tables in Las Vegas. Additionally he owns a poker table placed in his basement to keep check of his poker skills.During his college years he was a dedicated online poker player as well as being a regular at live games around the campus. He tells ”I played a cash game my sophomore year where I wiped out everyone by the end of the night, Starting with $40, I left with $620.”Essentially it is the social aspects that drew Brinker to the live games, yet he claims that ”the Internet is typically the source for larger payouts.””The thing with online play is not everyone is a broke college student,” Brinker said. ”Some of these guys are $100K a year job holders. He doesnt care. He’ll buy in for $100, lose it, and bet in for another 100. Those are the best tables to sit at. You get in a hand with someone like that and make $100 in however long it takes to get Ace King over Ace Queen.”Mike is from academic background, both his parents having medical degrees. They did not agree with poker playing. However with $9,000 in his pocket made from online poker, Mike was able to gain his own independence. The popularity of the poker game, specifically No Limit Texas Hold ‘em is apparent in the success of online poker sites and televised poker games. A national survey indicated that almost 10 percent of men aged 18 to 22 gamble online at least once a month.

Strategy with Kristy: Reid Young Discusses Showdown Value
March 22 2012, Kristy Arnett Related Articles Strategy with Kristy: Tax Time Strategy with Kristy: Quinn Sivage Discusses Min-Raising Button Strategy with Kristy: John Kim Part Two Share It Tags Cash Poker, Online Poker, Poker Players, Poker Strategy, PokerNews Podcast, PokerNews Strategy Print Reid Young is professional poker poker player who, prior to Black Friday, made his living playing online cash-games. In late 2010, he authored, The Blue Book: An Advanced Strategy Guide for No-Limit Hold’em Cash Games, which first sold for $2,500. Young is also a very sought out poker coach and has plans to launch an innovative coaching website. For this edition of the Strategy with Kristy Podcast, he discusses various topics, but really delves into advanced strategy concerning showdown value by illustrating it with a couple of hand histories. Here is a snippet from the interview: This straightforward guy raises in the cutoff. We are 100 big binds, effective, so we both have $200 at $1/$2. I reraise from the big blind with ace-nine suited just because its slightly below my calling requirements. Im not really comfortable calling. I think I can take it down preflop often, combined with continuation betting a decent amount and outplay him postflop, plus the equity of my actual hand versus his calling range gives me several ways I can win money here. I think they all add up to make me a small profit on the play. He called, and wed gone back and forth a little bit before this. I was kind of surprised to see him call. I more expected him to four-bet or fold, which is also why I decided to three-bet a hand like ace-nine. Im not as dominated by his calling range, and if he four-bets, I can just get away. It makes it easier to play and less likely that hes going to have an ace-X hand that he can combat my light three-bet with. The flop comes three-four-five, all different suits. This is a pretty good flop for me and one that puts him in an awkward position with a lot of hands like middle pairs. Also, hed call a bet on the flop with a lot of better ace-highs that I think I can get him to fold by the river. Its a good board for me being the aggressor and not one that he wants to get in a lot hands with. Even if he has a hand like pocket nines, in his best-case scenario, I have ace-king, and hes only a little better than a two-to-one favorite. Its not that amazing for him to raise pocket nines, so I have the green light to continuation bet here, looking to fold out queen-jack suited and hands like that. So, I do c-bet, and he ends up calling. When he calls, combined with the fact that I said that we have a fairly pre-established dynamic preflop, its extremely evident to me that he either has a similar hand to mine like ace-jack or ace-queen, or he has one of those medium pairs like nines, eights, or sevens. I think sixes might be a little too light to peel on this flop, but who knows, he could have those for sure. The turn is a two, which gives me the wheel. Its one of those spots where I have so many ace-highs in my range. Sure, I could have continuation bet the flop with king-queen or complete air like seven-eight, and then continued betting on the turn to try and represent an ace, but Ive found that more straightforward players that play their hands based on equity, just arent going to be calling down with pocket nines here. They are just worried about so much of my range, and they will worry about me betting the river. Its not like they just have to call the turn and the hand is over. I can still over-bet shove the river. I can have sixes in my range as well so its not that amazing of a situation for him if he has an ace, let alone a hand like pocket nines. It would be a really tough call down for him. Thats why I decided to check. Listen to the podcast to hear more of Young’s analysis on this hand. Both books were written in one three-week period, but publishers thought it best to release them in two parts. Little says the first volume focused on teaching fundamentals and basics, and that Volume Two goes into how to correctly apply the basics learned in Volume One. On this week’s Strategy with Kristy podcast, Little discusses a few key topics in Volume II. Here is a snippet from the interview: You have a section in the book about tells. Can you talk about a few basic tells? First, I’ll talk about why tells don’t really matter if you don’t know how to play well and you’re making fundamental blunders in a hand. If you have a tell that your opponent has a strong hand, it doesn’t really matter that much if you’re going to be vastly overplaying your hands or playing too tight. A tell should generally shift a really close call into a fold or a really close call into a raise, or something like that. It should help sway the borderline decisions. Your really standard decisions shouldn’t really sway too much unless your opponent just has a blatantly clear tell. For example, if a player starts breathing really hard when he has a good hand. That’s sort of a basic tell that a lot of players, even competent players, will do. They’ll start breathing really heavy whenever they have a strong hand or they’ll start blinking a lot whenever they have a weak hand. I outline quite a few of these tells in the book. They are pretty much what I’ve observed at the poker tables and also discussed with other poker players. They are all pretty good standard tells that most people don’t control or don’t think about controlling. Can you explain what a reverse tell is and what you think about them? Reverse tells are when you’re trying to throw off someone who knows the basic tells. I generally don’t do reverse tells too often because I think they’re kind of fishy in general.
